Graças a uma colaboração entre a Blue Safari Madeira, o Museu da Baleia da Madeira, a Rota dos Cetáceos e a Scorpio Madeira, acabámos de publicar uma nota sobre dois casos notáveis de predação por orcas (Orcinus orca) de cetáceos de mergulho profundo nas águas da Madeira. 🔹 Primeiro caso: um grupo de quatro orcas foi observado alimentar-se da uma carcaça de um zífio (Ziphius cavirostris) adulto. Isto foi possível graças à contribuição de Pedro Gomes. 🔹 Segundo caso: outro grupo de três orcas realizou um ataque coordenado a um cachalote-pigmeu (Kogia breviceps) vivo. Durante o ataque, o cachalote-pigmeu expeliu uma «tinta» castanha-avermelhada — um mecanismo de defesa raramente observado! Este estudo destaca o poder da colaboração entre operadores de observação de cetáceos e instituições de investigação, bem como a importância do esforço sustentado no mar e de ferramentas de registo eficientes para documentar espécies raras e comportamentos ecologicamente significativos. https://doi.org/10.1111/mms.70103 🐋🔬 📚 SCIENTIFIC PUBLICATION: Rare Killer Whale Predation Events! Thanks to a collaboration between Blue Safari Madeira, Madeira Whale Museum, Rota dos Cetáceos and Scorpio Madeira, we have just published a note on two remarkable cases of killer whale (Orcinus orca) predation on deep-diving cetaceans in Madeiran waters. 🔹 First event: A group of four killer whales was observed feeding on the carcass of an adult Cuvier’s beaked whale (Ziphius cavirostris). This was possible thanks to the contribution from Pedro Gomes. 🔹 Second event: Another group of three killer whales carried out a coordinated attack on a live pygmy sperm whale (Kogia breviceps). During the attack, the pygmy sperm whale expelled a reddish-brown ‘ink’ — a rarely observed defense mechanism! ✨ What an incredible sighting! ✨ Today we enco ✨ What an incredible sighting! ✨ Today we encountered a group of Cuvier’s beaked whales (Ziphius cavirostris) here in Madeira 💙🐋🐋 These whales hold the world record for the longest dive of any mammal — over 3 hours underwater 😱🌊! Normally, they dive to 1,000–3,000 meters deep, which is why seeing them at the surface (let alone more than one!) is so rare. They’re also easy to recognize: males often have lots of white scars from battles with each other, and their blunt head shape is very distinctive 👀. Madeira is one of the few places where your chances are a little higher 🍀 thanks to our deep ocean just off the coast. These records feed into CETUS’ database, supporting crucial research on the distribution, abundance, and conservation of marine mammals along the Portuguese coast 🌊.
