With the end of the season closing in, we wanted t With the end of the season closing in, we wanted to show you how much diversity we have had in the first half since it started! 📆 We were surprised by Fin whales almost all April 🐋 (the second biggest whale in the world 🌎), in May spotted dolphins🐬 made their return stronger than ever and we welcomed the migratory Bryde's whales 🐳, we closed June welcoming the curious rough-toothed dolphins 🦷 So, you can imagine what the second half has been like 🫡 Between 10 to 13 different species each month 🤯 We will soon reporting the other half but what are your guesses??? Formerly known as Cuvier's beaked whale, this is the Goose beaked whale 🐋🦷 In this picture you can see a mature male and we know this because of fhe teeth pointing out from its lower jaw in the pictures 🥹 his overall white coloration tell us he has been around for a while and we love that!!! Encounters with this species are rare but one this close to the boat?! Almost never happens!!! 🐬🚫We no longer offer swimming with dolphins🚫🐬 PLEASE READ THE CAPTION 👇🏻 We get asked about it often, so here is the honest answer. It isn’t a legal problem. In Madeira, the law permits in-water encounters with two species. But the rules stop at which species. The law does not protect the animals in the moments when swimmers should not be getting in the water, i.e. when a mother is nursing her calf, or when the pod is feeding, mating or resting. That is the part that matters🫠Once someone has paid for an encounter, there is pressure to produce one, and that pressure does not go away because the animals are not in the mood, or are nursing, or are stressed… At that point it stops being their choice. In other parts of the world this activity is run under rules that protect those moments, and by operators who are held to them. We are glad it exists there. Here, as the rules stand, we believe it does more harm than good. So we stopped offering it. What we do instead: we find them, we keep our distance, and we stay quiet. If they decide to come closer, that was their call and you will hear them breathe. We understand this is disappointing for some of you. Today was a magical day 🐢 We received the call Today was a magical day 🐢 We received the call from @okeam_seaturtle to release 2 loggerhead turtles that were under their care. For us it was a privilege. When we started our partnership we knew this meant not only taking data of this animals but to become actual advocates of their conservation. We were involved in the SummerShield workshop lead by @camiconciencia because we will always give back to the ocean, the amazing environment that has given us (and gives us) so much! Talk about magical encounters 🥹 This was TODAY Talk about magical encounters 🥹 This was TODAY on board Blue Safari. Sperm whales are the largest of the toothed whales and the only toothed whale considered a “great whale.” Right here in Madeira, they were hunted for over 40 years. It’s hard to believe we almost pushed them to extinction… and yet, after all this time, they’ve come back. Sort of forgiving us. Giving us another chance 🐋 Here’s the thing: we’ve driven animals to extinction but we’ve also brought them back. We’re all in this together. SPECIAL SIGHTING 💙🐢 Today the ocean gave us SPECIAL SIGHTING 💙🐢 Today the ocean gave us a gift: a LEATHERBACK TURTLE (Dermochelys coriacea) swimming in Madeiran waters! 🌊 Did you know? 🔹 It’s the largest sea turtle on Earth!!! up to 2 metres and 600 kg 🔹 It has no hard shell, just leathery skin over flexible bone 🔹 It can dive over 1,000 m deep 🤯deeper than most whales! 🔹 Its favourite food? Jellyfish 🪼 which is why plastic bags are one of its biggest threats Leatherbacks travel thousands of kilometres across the Atlantic, and every sighting here is a reminder of how connected our ocean is and how much these ancient travellers need our protection. 🌍 👉 Want to help?
